Take patriotism away, and the nation’s soul has fled. Edward Mark Deems
A reasoned patriotism is a love of country that develops because you have honestly and objectively considered your nation's history -- the good and the bad. It’s not something you adopt because someone told you to, and it’s not something you reject because it's the cool thing to do. We can honestly evaluate our nation's flaws while appreciating all that is good about our country. It does not have to be an "either/or" scenario.
In today’s media-driven world of fast-paced information saturation, people are losing their ability to think critically about the issues of the day. In addition, confusion abounds in our culture regarding patriotism and love of country. While some possess a fashionable disdain for their nation, others believe that America can do no wrong. Neither position is a balanced one. Is there a better way? These ideas are explored in A Reasoned Patriotism: Critical Thinking and Civic Duty in an Age of Polarization.
Additionally, in the appendix you will find practical suggestions for injecting patriotism and a sense of civic duty into your family culture, as well as an extensive collection of patriotic poems and songs.
